Business Week, one of the leading online business journals, has recently come up with a list of those American restaurants that have been in business the longest, surviving through economic downturns, location changes, fires, and culinary trends. Most of these restaurants have existed for over 150 years, have kept their original names, and, in most cases, have kept the ownership in the family:
Fraunces Tavern, NYC. Founded in 1762, this restaurant quickly became a well-known gathering place, often frequented by the leaders of a revolution; it was a center of community activity of the 18th Century, as important as the local church or Town Hall. It was in Fraunces Tavern that the first New York Chamber of Commerce was born, the tavern was also the host to the Sons of Liberty and other local revolutionaries, and it was frequented by George Washington. Located in Manhattan’s Financial District, the restaurant offers dinners and lunches, and hosts colonial style weddings.
Union Oyster House, Boston. Founded in 1826, the restaurant is listed as a national historic landmark, and is famous for its semi-circular Oyster bar. The eatery was a favorite of the Kennedy family who loved the privacy in the upstairs dining room. JFK’s favorite booth “The Kennedy Booth” has since been dedicated to his memory.
Antoine’s Restaurant, New Orleans. This restaurant is famous for its fine French-Creole cuisine and is credited for inventing the famous dish, Oysters Rockefeller. It features 15 memorabilia-rich dining rooms. Famous people who have dined at Antoine’s include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Pope John Paul II, Judy Garland, and Denzel Washington.
The Tadich Grill, San Francisco. This restaurant was founded by John Tadich, an immigrant from Croatia, in 1849 during the Gold Rush. At 160 years old, it is the oldest restaurant in San Francisco. The Tadich Grill still has its original 1849 mahogany bar, which runs the full length of the restaurant. The restaurant menu is famous for its delicious seafood cooked over mesquite charcoal.
Breitbach’s Country Dining, Balltown. Founded in 1852, the restaurant is still owned by the original Breitbach’s family, in the sixth-generation. The restaurant has stood the test of time even though it burned down twice and has a reputation for its fabulous homemade menu and signature fresh-baked bread and soups.
Old Ebbitt Grill, Washington. Established in 1856, Old Ebbitt Grill occupies an old building that was originally a boarding house. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Warren G. Harding used to frequent and enjoy Ebbitt’s stand-around bar. It is still a popular gathering place for political insiders, journalists, celebrities and theater-goers.
Gluek’s Bar and Restaurant, Minneapolis. One of Minneapolis’s oldest restaurants, Gluek’s bar was established in 1857 by the German immigrant Gottlieb Gluek. From its founding date, the restaurant has become renowned for brewing four different types of beer. The restaurant combines an ambiance of the casual charm and the Old World, features elaborate woodwork, stained-glass windows, and European Hall atmosphere.
Berghoff’s, Chicago. Founded in 1898, this Chicago’s renowned and beloved restaurant is still owned by the original Berghoff family. Berghoff’s restaurant is extremely popular in Chicago, with its current owner, Carlyn Berghoff, hosting regular TV & Radio appearances, writing books, keeping an active blog, and, of course, being a restaurateur. Restaurant with a rich history, it sells “The Berghoff Family Cookbook” – a remarkable collection of Berghoff Family’s classic recipes, history, color photos, and entertaining tips. The restaurant is famous for its beer brews, creamed spinach and freshly baked apple strudel.
